Mental health revealed as the biggest health concern in the UK

'mental health' written on laptop to show the UK's rising mental health crisis

As the Coronavirus pandemic continues to challenge our personal and professional lives, a new study has found that mental health is the UK’s biggest health concern.

Data from 87% has shown rising levels of anxiety, fatigue and work stress in what has been nearly a year since the outbreak, with wellbeing scores dropping by as much as 20% (showing deteriorating mental health) and users shifting their focus to address the mental health concerns. Levels of self-awareness have grown as people have looked for ways to address a lot of negative thoughts and feelings, such as anger, frustration and uncertainty, by choosing to work on their ability to manage their emotions.

Downloads of health apps have risen by as much as 6500%.

These trends are supported by new research from Uswitch.com, which reveals that mental health is at the top of people’s priority lists as they are increasingly unable to cope with high levels of localised restrictions and lockdowns. After Australia and Canada, the United Kingdom is the third most health-concerned country in the world.

During lockdown, downloads of health apps have soared, increasing by as much as 6,500% as poor mental health has been on the rise.

Caroline Outterside, Psychological Therapist with 87%, said, “To have a mental health resource in your pocket that is always accessible, providing information, help and support at any time of night and day, is a timely digital breakthrough that we can all benefit from. With so many people seeking or needing help, an app is a valuable way to find ways to manage your emotions, either by itself or as an adjunct or precursor to in-person therapy.”
